Da Wang Xiao Wan Cai Rice Sets

Post by Chiefeater VK

We had initially planned to have lunch at Loong Hwa on a Saturday afternoon. But weekends are not a good time to visit Loong Hwa, especially during lunch. There was a queue waiting to get in. Instead, we chose Da Wang Xiao Wan Cai which is just next door.

They serve the China style of mixed rice. Each food item comes in a small bowl, hence the name Xiao Wan (small bowl). Each bowl is also properly covered with a cling wrap. I guess this makes it more hygienic than the Malaysian style of mixed rice where the food items are in chafing dishes and you scoop up what you want. The variety may not be as much but it is certainly cleaner.

We had 3 food items. A Mala Pork, a Chicken in Chili Oil and a Stir Fried Egg Plant Dish. The chicken was a miss as it was bland. The pork and egg plant, we enjoyed. The Mala Pork was not overly spicy that it would leave your tongue numb. It just had enough Mala spice in it to tingle the tongue but not to dull the taste. I found myself finishing off the rice with the Mala oil / gravy. The pork was well seasoned and tender. All in our meal inclusive of drinks came up to RM29. This would be considered expensive for a mixed rice place so I think that is why they don’t get as many customers as Loong Hwa.
