As I journeyed north in search of a beach spot for a peaceful picnic under casuarina trees and coconut fronds, fate and my usual map app led me to the half-abandoned food court at Pantai Penunjuk in Kijal. Don't let the surroundings put you off, most of the outlets are closed on weekdays but the place gets busy on weekends when visitors quickly fill up the parking lot.
The refreshing coconut shake instantly caught my eye, a perfect companion to beat the searing noon heat. Served with fresh coconut juice and topped with cheap vanilla ice cream, it was a treat that refreshed and satisfied.

I also tried the ABJ (corn shaved ice) and ABC (mixed shaved ice). The ABJ delighted with creamed corn on top, while the ABC surprised with a medley of sweet delights like cendol strands, corn and red bean hidden within the ice.

Terengganu is famous for ikan celup tepung (ICT) or deep-fried fish, seafood, mushrooms, pretty much anything that can be dipped into a light batter and fried. Think of it as the local version of tempura. Here, I opted for the fried mushrooms (RM5 for a big plate) and prawns (RM10 per plate). The mushrooms had a good crunch, not overly greasy, allowing their earthy flavor to shine. The prawns - firm, large, and very fresh - were a burst of marine delight, having been cooked just minutes before serving.
Note that there are two outlets that serve ICT, where one seems to open when the other is closed. I've been here twice and I've never seen both open at the same time. Stray cats are also a problem here. Don't feed them so they don't associate visitors with a meal.
