Rojak Orang Hitam Putih. Why such a unique and eye-catching name for this rojak stall in Bukit Mertajam? This is how it all started many years ago. The first rojak stall at this busy road intersection was the legendary Rojak Orang Hitam aka Rojak Orang Hock.
It was named after the proprietor who is fondly called Or Lang Hock because of his dark complexion. He has since moved his business to Berapit to be nearer to his home.
Then came the second rojak stall on the other side of the road. It was named Rojak Orang Putih, probably to catch on the immense popularity of the pioneer stall at that time. Albeit its slow business, this stall aka BM Rojak is still open today.
In 2007, the third stall joined the rojak race at the intersection. It named itself Rojak Orang Hitam Putih, linking both its darker and fairer competitors. This new kid proves to be the best stayer in the long run and is currently the most patronized rojak stall in town.
The literal translation of 'Rojak Orang Hitam Putih' is 'Black White Man's Rojak', a very catchy name indeed.
A small plate (RM5) of the mouth-watering rojak with a generous sprinkle of crushed groundnuts on the plate and on top of the mixed ingredients.
Customers can choose to have the cut fruits and the rojak sauce with crushed groundnuts served separately too.
The main ingredients of rojak, fresh local fruits cut into small, bite-sized pieces.
Deep fried bean curd and flour fritters also go into the rojak to give it the added soft and smooth as well as hard and crunchy textures.
Rojak, our local fruit salad, has a unique compound of flavours that will arouse every taste buds on our tongue.
