Popiah, Street Food
Li Kuang Popiah (丽光薄饼), a very popular popiah stall, has been operating in this small roadside kopitiam for more than 30 years. The proprietress is a senior lady with a stern demeanor and customers are discouraged from crowding around her workplace.
Customers place their orders with the stall assistant and must be prepared to wait for at least half an hour. Sometimes it could be an hour or more! And the stall is only open for 90 minutes, from 3.30 pm to 5.00 pm!
The popiah here has the typical old-school (kochabi) taste. The popiah is served with sweet paste, chilli sauce and some fried garlic sprinkled on top.
The filling of the popiah consists of stewed jicama, blanched bean sprouts, omelette strips and whole prawns.
The prawns are arranged in such a way that when the roll of popiah is cut into four bite-sized pieces, there is a prawn in each of them. There are four whole prawns in each roll of the popiah and not the usual prawn slices, thus justifying its RM3 per roll price tag.
Most of the customers take away their orders as there is limited seats in the small kopitiam.
