Colony Buffet Lunch

Japanese, Omakase
I am elated to try the affordable and great value-for-money Omakase set lunch (SGD158) in AN Omakase, another upstart tucked along the heritage shoplots in Keong Saik Road. The menu here is seasonal, so surprises will be awaiting you during different time of the year.
Well hidden in the vibrant district of Keong Saik, An Omakase offers a remarkable dining experience that marries high-quality ingredients with masterful culinary techniques, all at an accessible price point. Entering reveals a dark waiting room, and opening the hidden doors leads to an intimate dining room with all counter seating. It is almost like a theatre where diners get to sit and watch the chefs in poetry. The chefs actually said it was like a starship – interstellar. That’s a good start (for me).
I always ask my daughter’s opinion about what’s the so what for each Omakase we’ve been over the years. For AN Omakase – we thought that it was the decor and ambience. Dark, contrast from the usual one piece wood table tops . This was granite or dark marble. The chefs were Malaysians who were very amicable. It was easy to settle into the meal.
Our sets were priced at SGD158 – so the ‘highest end’ offering at An’s.

Starter
– long cabbage nigiri Hokusai , steamed eggs , deep fried white fish (Shiomiwhite fish)

Sashimi platter

Saba shioyaki

Maguro

Sea bream. With sea bream roe topping

Isaki- grunt fish

Golden eye snapper – kinmedai (with truffle topping).

The ‘special’ dish was the red prawn torched aburi style and sprinkled with gold dust. That’s the ‘Instagram moment’ most of the youngsters would go for.

Red prawn- akaebi (with gold dust) with foie gras

Unni handroll

Miso soup

Seasonal dessert

Overall, I’d rate this 6/10 as far as Onakase’s go. Good place for a quick and fuss free lunch. Good place to enjoy fresh Japanese ingredients.
