We had lunch at Kafe Dapor Rumah Penang, on 88 Bishop Street. Besides its popular array of Nyonya kueh, Dapor Rumah serves a good selection of local dishes like Nasi Lemak with Chicken Rendang, Nyonya Fried Noodles, etc., besides the Hainanese-style kaya-butter toasts and soft-boiled eggs.
There are two standout dishes which are done very well:
Nyonya Laksa - which features Southern-Nyonya laksa, like the ones in Malacca, and which has the same taste profile as Singapore's Katong Laksa, or Sungei Road Trishaw Laksa: piquant with a dried shrimp-based rempah, and rich with coconut milk.
Mee Rebus - very light and well-balanced gravy.
