Nyonya Fusion, Halal
I had heard good news about the Nyonya fusion fare at Wood and Grill at Paradigm Mall so I decided to check out the place for myself. The nyonya-style shared dishes were apparently excellent with authentic flavors all around: good for corporate lunches and the like. This time, our group went for individual lunch dishes.
The petai fried rice (RM27.90) was my favorite of the lot. A chunky piece of tiger prawn sat nestled in the fiery fried rice sprinkled with morsels of pungent petai beans. This is the kind of selfish dish that you order only if you don’t plan on talking to anyone for the rest of the day. It comes with a piece of fried chicken topped with an equally fiery and flavorful sambal.

The black and white fried rice (RM26.90) had an interesting smoky flavor from the sambal hitam paste.

The Nyonya Solo fried rice (RM22.90) was a combination of a spicy kampung-style fried rice with sticks of wood-fired chicken satay. Nyonya meets Java.

The grilled eggplant was the second best dish of the day. The tender eggplant served as a soft base for a searingly hot red sambal and a green sambal with a more complex, sourish flavor. If your kids don’t like eggplant, try serving it with a healthy dollop of sambal on top.
Wood and Grill also has a large menu of grilled items. I might try that the next time I’m over at Paradigm Mall.
