Popiah, Street Food, Pork-Free
In Penang, we are blessed with so many kinds of hawker foods that choosing what to eat can be a dilemma, albeit a pleasant one. Too oily? Too spicy? Too heavy? Then, go for our good old-fashioned popiah (spring roll), it is among the least “sinful” hawker foods. Mdm Koay, the proprietress of this popiah stall is an old-timer who has been selling this dish for more than 30 years. She learnt the trade from her mother who has retired due to old age.

A big pot of the main ingredient of popiah, stewed mangkuang (yam bean).

The other ingredients include lettuce leaves, chopped deep fried bean curd, fried egg strips, sweet sauce and chilli sauce.

Traditional or old-school type popiah without any fancy or expensive add-ons.

Popiah to be packed with waxed paper for takeaway customers.

The price of the popiah.
