At BM Pasar KARIPAP in Bukit Mertajam. Curry puff or ‘karipap’ in Malay, is a crispy deep fried pastry that is filled with curried potatoes. Although located at a narrow sideroad, it is a well-patronized stall for its cheap and delicious snacks.

This stall in Bukit Mertajam is a popular place to get curry puffs since 1976.

This semi-circular shaped puff is a favourite snack among Malaysians.

Flakey and crispy on the outside, moist and savoury filling inside.

One of the two things worth mentioning about this stall is the price, the curry puff is sold at only 50 sen each.

The other is the cooking oil which is clean and golden in colour unlike some deep-frying snack stalls where the oil can be as dark as coffee. The stall assistant deep-frying the curry puffs in a big wok of cooking oil.

A tray of curry puffs waiting to be deep-fried at the stall.

Besides curry puffs, doughnuts, masadoleh and cucur badak are also available.
