Briyani, Pork-Free
We found ourselves at Hameediyah Masjid India, a Penang legend and the country’s oldest name in nasi kandar, having founded its business in the 1870s and first restaurant in 1907. However, this was one of their new outlets in KL, located at Semua House. So glad we did despite concerns that it might not be the way I remembered from childhood days when Dad used to bring home their mutton kurma & curries for us over his lunchbreak. Complete with happy, rotund staff in chequered sarongs who sat at the door & sang, they brought the magic by nailing the flavours I loved so much as a kid.

We had their briyani ayam bawang, bougie briyani, really. Mounds of fluffy, fragrant perfection, the rice was accompanied by tender chicken with light crispy skin.. and it was a nice surprise when they gifted us a full portion of their mahidee mutton dum briyani – simply because they felt we should taste their house special. Thank you for that.

I guess there are times when a little treat for the soul can place you on a road that leads you home.
