Assaggi Was Spectacular
Western
Chiefeater Luke Soon had dinner at Assaggi where getting a table now feels like winning the lottery

Pastry
We had a takeaway from Hủ Tiếu Hồng Phát Bến Thành after our earlier stop there for wantan.

The bao was tasty. There was a generous amount of filling inside, including what turned out to be a surprisingly large salted egg yolk. Unfortunately, the bao skin itself was rather thick and tough. Given that we had also found the wantan skin here noticeably thick, I am beginning to think that a more substantial wrapper is simply part of their house style.

But the item that really got my attention was the pork liver pâté puff.

At VND49,000, this was the thing I would go back for. The pastry had plenty of distinct flaky layers and a crisp exterior, while the pork liver pâté provided that rich, savoury depth inside. It is the contrast that makes this sort of pastry work: brittle, buttery layers outside against a much softer and more intensely flavoured filling.
Hủ Tiếu Hồng Phát may be best known for its noodles, but on this occasion it was something from the takeaway counter that I liked most.
Pork Liver Pâté Puff – VND49,000
MVX Score: 8.1/10
M – Meal Value
At VND49,000, the pork liver pâté puff was good value for something I enjoyed enough to specifically return for. The bao was tasty too, although its price was not recorded.
Score: 8.0/10
V – Vroomness
Both items travelled well as takeaway. The puff retained the flaky structure that made it enjoyable, while the bao also held together well despite my reservations about its thick skin.
Score: 8.0/10
X – X-Factor
The pork liver pâté puff. It was unexpected, properly flaky and had enough richness from the pâté to make it memorable beyond Hồng Phát’s better-known noodle dishes.
Score: 8.5/10
