Chicken Wings, Street Food
The Master Kow Chicken Wing stall at Restoran Soon Sing caught my attention because there is something very direct about charcoal-grilled chicken wings at night.
You see the wings turning over the fire, you smell the glaze hitting the charcoal, and before long, ordering a set feels almost inevitable.
I tried one set of the Signature Chicken Wings and one set of the Hot & Spicy Chicken Wings. Each set comes with two wings at RM9, so the total came to RM18.
Between the two, the spicy version was easily the better choice.
The Hot & Spicy Chicken Wings had more personality. The glaze gave the wings a stronger kick, with enough heat and seasoning to make each bite more interesting. The skin had that glossy, sticky finish that you want from grilled chicken wings, while the meat still had enough moisture to make it enjoyable.
The Signature Chicken Wings, on the other hand, were a little too safe. They looked the part, but the flavour was quite normal and almost underseasoned compared to the spicy version. It was not bad, but it did not have the same pull that made me want to keep going back for another bite.
For me, this is one of those stalls where the right flavour makes all the difference.
If you are ordering from Master Kow Chicken Wing, I would skip the regular signature version and go straight for the spicy wings.
Signature Chicken Wings – RM9 for 2 pieces
Hot & Spicy Chicken Wings – RM9 for 2 pieces
Total – RM18
MVX Score: 7.6/10
M – Meal Value
At RM9 for two wings, the pricing is fair for charcoal-grilled chicken wings. The spicy version gave better value because it had more flavour and impact, while the signature version felt a little too mild.
Score: 7.7/10
V – Venue & Vibes
Restoran Soon Sing has the classic night-time kopitiam energy, with stalls operating along the frontage, smoke from the grill and plenty of street-side movement. It is not polished, but it has the kind of lively atmosphere that suits grilled chicken wings.
Score: 7.6/10
X – X-Factor
The charcoal-grilled setup gives the stall some appeal, but the difference between the two flavours matters. The spicy wings had enough kick to be memorable, while the signature wings felt too ordinary to stand out.
Score: 7.5/10
