Kubis & Kale The Gardens Mall Butterfish and Lime Mint

Chiefeater Pat Lim returned to Kubis & Kale The Gardens Mall for favourite butterfish and a refreshing Lime Mint drink

Vietnamese
We stopped at Ngoi Saigon for lunch and kept our order fairly simple: a Seafood Glass Noodles Claypot and an order of fried Shrimp Pork Wontons.

The claypot certainly looked impressive when it arrived. There were prawns, crab meat, Chinese sausage and vegetables sitting over the glass noodles, making it a fairly substantial one-pot meal. It was alright, but it wasn’t a dish that particularly stood out for me.

I enjoyed the fried wontons more. These came with wrappers fried until crisp, with the shrimp and pork filling inside. I liked the contrast between the crunchy exterior and the filling, and they were easily my preferred dish of the two.

Ngoi Saigon itself has a rather pleasant interior. The patterned floor tiles, Vietnamese posters, conical hats and colourful floral cushions give the dining room plenty of local character without making it feel overly themed.
For this lunch, though, it was those little fried wontons that I would order again.
Seafood Glass Noodles Claypot – VND315,000
Shrimp Pork Wontons (8 pieces) – VND95,000
Mineral Water × 2 – VND80,000
Total: VND490,000
Average per pax: VND245,000
MVX Score: 7.3/10
M – Meal Value
The VND315,000 seafood claypot was substantial and came with a variety of seafood and other ingredients, but it didn’t particularly stand out for me. The VND95,000 fried shrimp and pork wontons were the better dish and the one I would order again.
Score: 7.0/10
V – Venue
Ngoi Saigon has an attractive Vietnamese-inspired dining room with patterned tiles, colourful cushions, travel posters and traditional conical hats used as decoration. Comfortable and pleasant for a sit-down lunch.
Score: 7.5/10
X – X-Factor
There wasn’t one major element that made the meal exceptional, although the restaurant does present Vietnamese character in a comfortable, accessible setting.
