Chiefeater Khor Hui Min and her family had a delicious and affordable lunch at Highlands Spice Cameron Highlands

Porridge, Street Food, Non-Halal
We had Sunday morning breakfast at Restoran Ipoh Kong Heng in Ipoh Old Town. My dad and brother ordered the prawn noodles (RM9.00 each) and I ordered the porridge (RM7.00). My mum wanted half-boiled eggs, but they ran out of eggs at 9 am? Then she wanted kaya toast, but they were out of kaya too. At last she settled for an egg tart (RM2.50).

My porridge was smooth and had a generous amount of 3 types of eggs inside – century egg, salted egg and hard-boiled egg – all chopped into small chunks. I quite enjoyed the porridge and didn’t feel thirsty after eating it. The egg custard was nice, as usual. And the iced white coffee was kaw, the way I like it. My dad has ordered the prawn mee often and the stall operator recognises my family members, but he doesn’t like the metal bowls they are putting their food in now.

There’s a roasted chestnut stall on a motorbike in front of the shop, and a truck selling large curry chicken buns and etc. across the road.

Constructed during the 1920s, the building that Restoran Ipoh Kong Heng occupies was originally designed as a hostel catering to the needs of actors performing at the adjacent Chinese opera theatre. The theatre itself had a rich history, with its initial construction dating back to 1891 and subsequent reconstruction taking place in 1906. Unfortunately, the theatre has since been demolished.
