Meatballs, Non-Halal
I became a fan of Chang Jiang White Coffee after my first taste of it at a restaurant in Puchong. Their signature brew had a smooth, robust flavour that really caught my attention, so when the opportunity arose to visit their Jalan Windsor outlet, known as CJ7, I was eager to relive that experience. Founded in 1981, Chang Jiang have grown from a small, local business in Ipoh to a widely known brand. Their unique take on white coffee, where the beans are roasted with margarine instead of sugar, has helped them establish a loyal following over the years.

The CJ7 outlet is set in a charming, single-storey bungalow, with an additional outdoor seating area that complements the casual, cosy vibe. Given my high expectations, we decided to stop by for lunch. I opted for a bowl of noodles with fried wantan, ordered a meatball to share, and couldn’t resist adding their famous toast to the mix.

However, as much as I wanted to be wowed, the experience fell a bit flat. The white coffee, which I had so looked forward to, surprisingly lacked the aroma and depth I’d come to associate with the brand. It felt as though something was missing, or perhaps my anticipation had set the bar too high. Or could it be that the kopi barista elsewhere made a better brew than Chang Jiang themselves?

The noodles were on the bland side, not offering much in terms of flavour. Even the fried wantan, which I had hoped would be a saving grace, didn’t quite deliver.

The meatballs, however, were the highlight of the meal — savoury, and satisfying. They were the one dish that stood out amidst an otherwise underwhelming spread.
