Hakka
Can firmer noodles make up for flavours that never fully arrive? Ke Lai Heritage in Bandar Puteri Puchong has taken over the premises previously occupied by Holiao Noodles, retaining several familiar dishes while expanding the menu with Hakka braised meats, beef brisket, laksa, chilli pan mee and other comfort-food options.

For lunch, I ordered the three-piece Yong Tau Foo with Dry Noodles and Pork Lard set (RM9.90). I selected bitter gourd, fried tofu and chilli, then added a Fried Pork Wanton (RM2.00).

The noodles had a satisfyingly firm bite. In fact, they were firmer than I remembered from Holiao Noodles, giving them a better and more substantial texture.
Texture, however, was doing most of the work.

The noodles themselves were bland and depended heavily on the pieces of pork lard for flavour. Each bit of pork lard delivered the savoury richness that the noodles needed, but without it, the seasoning felt thin and incomplete. Pork lard should enhance a bowl of noodles rather than carry the entire dish.
The Yong Tau Foo was the greater disappointment. The paste lacked the robust savoury character associated with good Hakka Yong Tau Foo. Instead, it tasted insipid, with little depth or personality. The bitter gourd, fried tofu and chilli gave the plate some variety, but the same underwhelming paste ran through all three pieces. The fried wonton was too tough.
Ke Lai Heritage has retained parts of the former Holiao menu while adding a broader range of dishes, including Hakka Braised Pork Rice, Beef Brisket Noodles, Signature Nyonya Laksa and Signature Chilli Pan Mee. The expanded selection gives me a reason to return and try something else, but this Hakka noodle and Yong Tau Foo combination did not deliver the depth of flavour promised by the menu.
The meal came to RM13.80 nett after service charge and SST. It remains an affordable lunch, and the noodles have good texture, but value alone cannot compensate for bland seasoning and Yong Tau Foo paste that lacks a convincing Hakka identity.

MVX Score: 7.2/10
M – Meal Value
The set is attractively priced and provides noodles with three pieces of Yong Tau Foo. The noodles had a good firm texture, but they were bland without the pork lard. The insipid Yong Tau Foo paste was the main weakness and lacked the robust savoury taste expected from a Hakka offering.
Score: 7.5/10
V – Venue & Vibes
The restaurant provides a bright, casual setting suited to a straightforward lunch. The expanded menu also gives regular diners a wider range of dishes than the previous operation.
Score: 7.5/10
X – X-Factor
The firmer noodles were noticeable, but Ke Lai Heritage’s Hakka noodle set did not establish a strong identity. The pork lard supplied most of the flavour, while the Yong Tau Foo paste lacked the depth needed to make the dish memorable.
