Nyonya Cuisine, Non-Halal
food hunt for nyonya food led me to Sifu Nyonya Cuisine. i love nyonya food (or peranakan food) so like to patronise nyonya food restaurant (but not that michelin star aunty gaik lean because it has no pork! good nyonya food must have pork.)
i remember meeting the owner, peter leong at the penang community day at gurney paragon where i tapau (takeaway) his lorbak back. he welcome me to his restaurant and said dessert will be on him if i visit, so i go lah. went with 3 friends. we ordered 5 dishes and all of us like them very much. they all said all dishes were delicious.

hanga hu gulai (stingray fish curry) RM39.90
comes with some okra pieces. fish was fresh and tasted good but no spicy at all for me although i used up a lot of the curry to ‘banjir’ (flood) my rice.

nyonya hong bak (braised pork belly with special spices) RM33.90
love this as hong bak is one of my fav nyonya dish. why, i even try cooking it once (but with ready instant paste lah). i notice that the pork here were cut into small pieces... and also the potatoes. i like it this way. well old aunty need small pieces to bite. lol.

sambal udang (prawns with chilly) RM29.90
prawns we're medium size... almost to small size actually. not many i think as i only managed to take 2 pcs. there were cucumber and long sliced onions too, which i scooped up to eat (since no more prawns. anyway the prawns were fresh and good, sambal not spicy

jiu hu char (julienned jicama with carrots, cabbage, pork and some mushroom and cuttlefish) RM19.90
er... okay lah. since i didnt really like this dish that much so to me ok... passable but my friends said good. not my choice but a friend’s

inchi kabin chicken (fried spice marinated chicken) RM24.90
this is very good to me. i love it. in fact better than other inche kabin i have try. however only get to eat 1 piece so not satisfied. if next time i do go again, wanted to order it again. the chicken was crispy on the outside and inside tender and flavourful taste.

spicy pomelo salad. RM19.90
first time trying such a dish and delighted that it was very delicious. taste sour, salty and a bit spicy. lovely taste. beside the pomelo, it has some kafir lime leaves and bunga kantan (ginger torch flower)

dessert (RM8.90) – but complimentary for us
there are 3 types of desserts
- bubur cha cha (sweet potatoes, taro and black-eye peas in a coconut milk)
- gandum (wheat porridge with coconut milk and palm sugar)
- bee kor moi (black glutinous rice porridge with dried longans)

i don't take the first two so i went for bee for moi but all my 3 friends went for the bubur cha cha. however later we found out bubur cha cha only left 2 bowls so one of my friend opted for the same as me. peter who was there to apologise to us for only 2 bowls left suggested we take gandum but nobody wanted gandum but he was so kind to let us have a bowl of gandum anyway to be shared by all of us. thus 5 bowls of complimentary desserts. thanks a lot peyer
first time seeing the plate and utensils with a serviette paper enclosed in clingfilm. very good as more hygeine to keep dust away. bottom is the rice - the butterfly blue pea rice. they only serve this blue pea rice, no white rice (butthey have nasi ulam).
er... we think that if eat with those dishes with curry or samble, will taste better with plain white rice. so a suggestion from us - to have white rice too as an option

i like the environment of the restaurant - small but cosy and comfortable. best of all is that the place is full of lovely peranakan (antique?) stuffs. even the ceiling above is beautifully decorated.
the damage was RM203.70 for 4 pax! there is 10% service tax. well consider, each person RM50, ok lah, with 5 good yummy dishes.
