Korean, Non-Halal
Sotbap (솥밥) is a Korean dish of rice cooked in a heavy pot, usually made of stone, metal, or stainless steel, and topped with various ingredients. The name translates to "pot rice" and Sot Bab in Sunway Geo specialises in that.
Lunch at Sot Bab was an expansion of my Korean palate, specifically their famed Ganjanggejang Set (RM52). This is a soy-marinated crab that was recommended to me by a Korean foodie, and I was eager to give it a try. The first taste was an experience. The savoury depth of the soy marinade melded beautifully with the delicate, jelly-like texture of the raw crab meat. While this texture might be an acquired taste for some, I found it intriguing and enjoyable. It’s prepared meticulously, with the crabs marinated a day prior to serving, ensuring every bite is infused with flavour. Locally sourced crabs add a fresh touch to this dish.

For comparison, there’s a Thai dish named Yum Pu Ma, a blue crab marinated in fish sauce and lime juice, often spiced up with chili. While Yum Pu Ma leans towards a zesty, spicy profile, Ganjanggejang offers a more subdued, umami-rich experience that I personally enjoyed more for its complexity.
The Bossam Set (RM45), another highlight, featured slices of thick, tender boiled pork wrapped in kimchi. The pork was succulent, with just the right amount of fat, delivering a mouthwatering richness.

The kimchi added an earthy note, the chives are a spicy punch and something akin to a cencaluk adding a robust punch to the meat.

The accompanying banchan were excellent across the board, offering a variety of flavours and textures that enhanced the meal.
Sot Bab proved to be a delightful exploration of authentic Korean flavours, with dishes that showcased both traditional preparation and exceptional taste. This is a place I’d gladly revisit for more.
