Night Market
Jalan Gaya in Kota Kinabalu is a street that undergoes a dramatic transformation from night to day. On Friday (and Saturday) nights, the area bursts into life as it becomes home to the vibrant Api Api Night Food Market. Stalls line the sidewalks under colourful canopies, selling everything from local handicrafts and souvenirs to trendy accessories and street food. The air is thick with the aroma of grilled seafood, sizzling satay, and freshly made kuih, drawing both tourists and locals alike.

People sitting on the streets to enjoy their food.

Buskers add to the lively atmosphere, creating a scene that feels like a celebration of Sabah’s diverse culture.

Same part of the street the next morning.

Yet, come Saturday morning, the scene is almost unrecognisable. The once-crowded walkway of the Api Api Night Food Market is now peaceful, the streets swept spotless by the tireless efforts of Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) cleaners. The morning stillness reveals the charm of the old shophouses that line the street, many of which house decades-old coffee shops serving up a quintessential Sabahan breakfast of kaya toast, eggs, strong kopi o and noodles.
