Kopi
Stopped by Yuit Cheong Coffee Shop along Jalan Pantai, one of Kota Kinabalu’s oldest kopitiams. Established in the post-war 1940s, Yuit Cheong is one of Kota Kinabalu’s oldest Hainanese coffee shops, said to have once served state leaders and locals alike. That legacy alone makes it worth a visit for history lovers.

The kaya toast was notably thin and dry. Without the usual slab of butter, it fell rather one-dimensional in flavour. The kaya itself was mild, without much fragrance or caramel depth.

The kopi ais, however, was enjoyable — smooth, balanced, and with just the right sweetness to start the day.

The bill came to RM9.80 for two drinks and one toast set.
Take note: it’s cash-only, with no e-wallet or card facilities.
Score: 7.0/10
M – Meal Value (6.5): Kaya toast was average, kopi was good, portion small for the price.
V – Vibe & Venue (7.8): A nostalgic space with friendly service and an authentic old-town feel.
X – X-Factor (6.7): The historical legacy and courteous staff keep it relevant, even as the food slips behind.
