Malay
Lunch at Warung Resepi Mak Den, a roadside stall in Taman Medan.

I gravitated toward the glass noodles, a rustic and comforting medley packed with tempeh, chicken, and potatoes. The defining element here was the sambal jawa; it was beautifully savoury without overstaying its welcome on the heat scale, allowing the textures of the tempeh and potatoes to really shine. It is the kind of unpretentious, balanced cooking that feels both hearty and honest.

Looi opted for the ayam masak merah, which he described as excellent. The sauce was rich, vibrant, and possessed that perfect cling-to-the-chicken consistency that defines a well-executed version of this classic.

In an era of rising costs, even a lunch for two at a roadside stall comes up RM26.
MVX Score: 7.0/10
M – Meal Value
For RM13 per person, you get a nice portion of protein and sides alongside a drink though the heat is a bit of a distraction
Score: 7.0/10
V – Venue & Vibes
As a roadside warung, the vibe is raw, authentic, and inherently local. It’s a “living” part of the Taman Medan community, offering a breezy, open-air setting that is perfect for a quick, no-frills lunch stop.
Score: 6.0/10
X – X-Factor
The X-factor is the Sambal Jawa. This savoury, Indonesian-inspired base transforms the humble glass noodles and tempeh into something far more complex and addictive than your standard roadside fare.
