Coffee
Breakfast at 103 Coffee has become something I look forward to whenever I feel like slowing the pace a little. It is one of those cafés where the coffee is every bit as important as the food, and this visit reminded me why.
Jen’s drink order was a B.O.I. which was a great show as the coffee has it’s own presentation as it’s set on the table.

Jen ordered the Chicken Sausage Dashi Soup with an onset egg and buckwheat soba. The broth immediately impressed her. It was beautifully seasoned without becoming overly salty, delivering a comforting depth that worked wonderfully with the earthy buckwheat noodles. The grilled chicken sausage added a satisfying bite, while the onsen egg made the bowl even more comforting once the yolk mixed into the soup.

I went with the Poached Eggs Shakshouka. The tomato base was rich and hearty, carrying enough acidity to keep every mouthful lively. The poached eggs were nicely cooked, while the toasted bread with a fluffy texture that was unexpected (but good) was ideal for soaking up every last bit of the sauce. It was a dish that felt both wholesome and satisfying without being overly heavy.

As enjoyable as breakfast was, the star of the morning turned out to be the coffee.
The Hot Flat White, brewed using the Nova Colombia El Indio beans, was excellent. The tasting notes listed caramelised banana, maraschino cherries and dark chocolate, and while those fruity notes were subtle, the dark chocolate character came through beautifully. It gave the coffee a deep, rounded finish with plenty of sweetness and balance, making it one of the more memorable flat whites I have had recently.

Good food brought us in, but it was the quality of the coffee that made the visit stand out.

The Nova Colombia El Indio flat white was easily the highlight. Its pronounced dark chocolate notes lingered pleasantly, while the well-seasoned buckwheat soba broth provided another memorable talking point.
