Steak
We walked into Moo Point Steaks Penang without a reservation. Fortunately, we were early.

It was just after 6:00 pm and they managed to give us a table, with one condition: we had to vacate it by 7:30 pm.
That worked perfectly for us since we had another appointment at 8 pm.
The first thing that struck me about Moo Point Steaks was the atmosphere. The main dining room is deliberately dark, with pools of light over the tables. It is clearly made for romantic and intimate dinners.

For a corporate meal, though, I wouldn’t choose the main room. The good news is that they have a private space downstairs which is brighter and can accommodate 12 people.
There was also one house rule we were told about before ordering: each diner needs to order a main. In other words, you can’t order one steak and share it between two people.
Fair enough. We ordered two.
The MP Steak – Rump Cap (RM84) was cooked medium (this was how they do it as they told us the rump cut is best done medium), while the Wagyu Sirloin MB4-5 (RM198) was medium rare.
Both tasted good. My advice: don’t bother with sauce. When beef is seasoned and cooked properly, adding a sauce can sometimes distract from what you’re actually paying for.
The rump cap had good beefy flavour.

However, the Wagyu’s superior marbling gave it the softer, richer texture you would expect.

The photograph says quite a lot. That Wagyu had a beautifully pink centre, a properly browned exterior and enough internal fat to give the meat that lush texture without needing anything else on it.

We also ordered two sides.
The Grilled Carrots with Hazelnut Dukkah and Labneh (RM18) were enjoyable, as was the Cauliflower Tempura with Yukari and Chives (RM16).

I particularly liked that the sides weren’t merely vegetables placed next to an expensive steak. Both had enough thought put into them to stand on their own, though I felt the grilled carrots would have fared better without the sauce.
Our bill came to RM366.55 for two, without drinks.
So no, Moo Point isn’t a cheap steak dinner.
But this was our final night in Penang, and it turned out to be an excellent meal to finish the trip.
It’s just too bad I couldn’t enjoy that Wagyu with a glass of wine that night.
MP Steak – Rump Cap – RM84.00
Wagyu Sirloin MB4-5 – RM198.00
Grilled Carrots / Hazelnut Dukkah / Labneh – RM18.00
Cauliflower Tempura / Yukari / Chives – RM16.00
Subtotal – RM316.00
Service Charge (10%) – RM31.60
SST (6%) – RM18.96
Rounding – -RM0.01
Total – RM366.55
Average per pax – RM188
Once you factor in drinks, a realistic amount to pay per pax would exceed RM200 per pax
MVX Score: 8.2/10
M – Meal Value
RM366.55 for two without drinks puts this firmly into premium-dinner territory. The Wagyu accounts for more than half the food bill, but the quality and cooking justified much of that premium. The RM84 rump cap also offers a more accessible way into the experience.
Score: 8.0/10
V – Venue
The dark, intimate dining room works beautifully for couples and small personal dinners. It is less suited to a conventional corporate meal, although the brighter private room downstairs gives groups another option.
Score: 8.5/10
X – X-Factor
Good steak that doesn’t need sauce so I didn’t pay extra for any of their recommended sauces. The Wagyu’s marbling and texture were the highlight, while the thoughtful sides made this feel like more than simply ordering a piece of expensive beef.
