Oyster Omelette, Street Food
Supper at Red Garden Food Paradise Penang, and I had one of those dishes where the photograph really does tell part of the story.
I ordered a small plate of oyster omelette for RM15.

When it arrived, my first thought was:
What’s this?
In Hokkien, oyster omelette is Oh Chien.
Looking at the colour of the oyster omelette, I was tempted to call this one O Chien (O in this case meaning black) instead. 😜

It was seriously blackened in places and, visually, it wasn’t doing itself any favours.
The good news?
It didn’t taste as bad as it looked.
There were plenty of oysters and the omelette still had the soft, slightly sticky texture associated with the dish. But that darkened appearance made it considerably less appetising before I’d even taken my first bite.
At RM15 for the small plate, this is the price that is to be paid within the Heritage Zone. Execution, particularly visually, was another matter.
Still, there was another reason I wanted to drop by Red Garden.
This is one of the locations prominently featured in Sandiwara, the 2026 short film written and directed by Oscar-winning director Sean Baker and starring Michelle Yeoh.
Michelle plays five different characters in the film, whose stories eventually converge right here at Red Garden. There is a hawker, waitress, vlogger, food critic and singer, with the food court’s stage and stalls forming a major part of the finale.
Watching the real-life singers performing on the Red Garden stage made that connection particularly obvious. Yeah, that male singer in the short film is still on stage here.

So the Oh Chien wasn’t exactly the prettiest supper I’ve had in Penang.
But sitting in a George Town food court that ended up on screen with Michelle Yeoh?
I guess that was the touristy thing that had to be checked off the box, especially since this place was just down the road from where I was staying.
Small Oyster Omelette – RM15
MVX Score: 7.0/10
M – Meal Value
RM15 is probably pricier than most places outside the Heritage zone for the portion. It tasted better than its appearance suggested, although its colour certainly didn’t help the experience.
Score: 6.5/10
V – Venue
Red Garden is a large, lively open-air food court with numerous stalls and live entertainment on stage. It is more about atmosphere and variety than comfort or refinement.
Score: 7.0/10
X – X-Factor
Its appearance in Sandiwara gives Red Garden an unexpected cinematic connection. Michelle Yeoh playing five characters whose stories converge here makes an already colourful Penang food court that bit more interesting.
Score: 8.0/10
