The Mosaic Cafe at Hyatt Regency Kota Kinabalu sells an RM25 Oxtail Assam Pedas Pie with flaky, buttery pastry and a generous filling

Malaysian
Oxtail Assam Pedas is one of Tanjung Ria Kitchen’s signature dishes at Hyatt Regency Kota Kinabalu, and I had the entire serving to myself.

At RM78, it isn’t cheap, but the portion was generous. The bowl came with several substantial chunks of oxtail sitting in a rich-looking red gravy, accompanied by rice, papadum and a small serving of pickled vegetables.

The oxtail was savoury and satisfying, with enough meat that I certainly couldn’t complain about the portion. The gravy had a good level of spiciness, although the sourness normally associated with assam pedas wasn’t particularly pronounced.

It was a substantial meal, and one that left me well satiated.
I also had a 1602 Pale Ale to accompany the dish.

The service at Tanjung Ria Kitchen was excellent.
Interestingly, Hyatt Regency Kota Kinabalu also sells an Oxtail Assam Pedas Pie at The Mosaic Cafe. I tried that separately and actually preferred the balance of flavours in the pie.
That doesn’t take away from the generous serving at Tanjung Ria Kitchen. If you’re after a substantial oxtail dish with a spicy gravy, this one certainly delivers on portion size.
Oxtail Assam Pedas – RM78
1602 Pale Ale – RM30
I had a 25% discount since I had signed up for the Hyatt membership.
MVX Score: 7.7/10
M – Meal Value
RM78 is a considerable price for a single dish, but the generous chunks of savoury oxtail made it a satisfying meal. The gravy was spicy, although it lacked a more pronounced sour note.
Score: 7.5/10
V – Vibe & Venue
The dining experience benefited from excellent service and well-maintained toilets. Parking was not assessed.
Score: 8.0/10
X – X-Factor
A generous serving of oxtail in a spicy assam pedas gravy makes this a distinctive signature dish, although the flavour balance wasn’t quite as compelling as the pie version I tried separately.
Score: 7.5/10
