Fried Rice
Chiefeater Luke Soon gets the credit for discovering New Hao Yue Lou Seafood Restaurant in SS4, and it became the venue for a catch-up over dinner with Chiefeater DC and Chiefeater Amelia as well.
We ordered a Pipa Duck, a stir-fried vegetable, Sing Kwa Taufu and a Curry Pork Ribs.

The dishes were alright.
Of the initial dishes, the Dry Curry Pork Ribs fared better than the others. In fact, pork ribs appear to be something New Hao Yue Lou is known for, with several preparations appearing on their menu.

But the dish that changed the evening wasn’t actually part of our original order.
At some point during dinner, I noticed the table beside us receiving not one but two large plates of fried rice. That piqued my interest. Luke had noticed it too, so the two of us agreed that we should order a plate just to see what the fuss was about.
Good thing we did. The fried rice turned out to be the star of the night.

There was good wok hei running through the rice and plenty of flavour. It was one of those instances where watching what the neighbouring table ordered proved more useful than studying the menu.
And perhaps ordering two large plates wasn’t such a strange decision after all.
Despite the name, New Hao Yue Lou isn’t actually new. The business has been operating since April 2013, but moved to SS4D/14 in 2024.
For me, it was an alright dinner that suddenly became much more interesting towards the end. Next time, the fried rice wouldn’t be an afterthought.

M – Meal Value
Most of the dishes were alright, with the Curry Pork Ribs faring better than the Pipa Duck, vegetables and Sing Kwa Taufu. The surprise was the fried rice. Good wok hei and flavour made what was originally an impulse order the best dish of our dinner.
Score: 8.0/10
V – Venue
New Hao Yue Lou is an air-conditioned neighbourhood Chinese seafood restaurant designed more for family and group dining than ambience. It can become particularly busy during peak periods.
Score: 7.0/10
X – X-Factor
Sometimes the most interesting recommendation comes from the next table. Seeing two large plates of fried rice arrive next door led us to the best dish of our evening.
