Bulgogi
Ganggyeong Bulgogi is a popular South Korean restaurant franchise specialising in charcoal-grilled beef and pork bulgogi (불고기). This branch is far from the tourist trail, in the city’s quiet north-east, and local friends brought me here for lunch.
The star is the charcoal-grilled pork bulgogi (숯불 돼지불고기), soy-marinated and piled high on a copper wire grill tray, with charred edges and a real smoky aroma. It came crowned with glazed king prawns (대하구이), in season now, and grilled abalone (전복구이), sliced and sprinkled with sesame. Surf and turf, Korean style. The meat arrives already grilled, so there is no work for you, only eating.
Wrap it the local way: a piece of bulgogi with a dab of ssamjang (쌈장) in lettuce and perilla leaves (쌈채소), which are refilled freely. A clear beef and radish soup (소고기뭇국) cuts through the richness.
My favourite part came at the end: sungnyung (숭늉), a traditional Korean infusion made from scorched rice (누룽지, nurungji). The rice is cooked in a claypot (솥밥, sotbap), leaving a thin, golden crust stuck to the bottom. Once the fluffy rice is scooped out, hot water is poured straight over that crust and the pot is covered. It softens and infuses into a warm, toasty, nutty rice tea, with soft bits of scorched rice at the bottom. It is the traditional Korean palate cleanser, cutting through the richness of a hearty bulgogi, and I enjoyed it as my dessert.
Consistent, generous and a reliable choice. If you are visiting the new Seoul Robot & AI Museum (서울로봇인공지능과학관) nearby, this is a good place to eat.
