Nanyang Style
A morning exploration of Seri Kembangan led us to Xiao Lao Hu Kopitiam.

I ordered their signature Mee Siam Babi Goreng Berempah, paired with a hot, less-sugar Coffee and an iced, sugar-free Teh O. The visual assembly arrived promptly, featuring vermicelli capped with a fried egg, sambal, fresh cucumber slices, and a generous heap of deep-fried sliced pork.

While the online reviews had set an incredibly lofted expectation for the fried pork, the actual tasting revealed a much more grounded reality. The meat is perfectly acceptable—crisp on the edges and decently seasoned with local spices—but it completely lacks anything spectacular that would compel someone to make a dedicated drive just to experience it.

The Mee Siam itself was well-textured and carried a mild tang, making it a decent breakfast option. It is a good neighborhood joint for a comfortable morning fuel stop, but it is best to leave the hyperbole at the door.
The coffee was really meh. I left it two thirds unfinished.

Mee Siam Babi Goreng Berempah: RM15.90
Coffee: RM3.90
Teh O: RM3.50
Total: RM26.24 (inclusive of 8% Service Charge)
MVX Score: 6.7
M – Meal Value
At just over RM26 for a substantial single-pax breakfast platter alongside two separate beverages in a fully air-conditioned shop, the basic economy of the meal holds up well. It offers good functional value for daily dining, even if the flavor profile doesn’t touch legendary heights.
Score: 6.5/10
V – Venue & Vibes
The layout is exceptionally pleasant for a neighborhood kopitiam. Moving away from open-air dust and humidity, the cool, pristine interior and well-spaced tables offer a highly comfortable environment to read the morning news or enjoy a relaxed morning brew.
Score: 7.0/10
X – X-Factor
The X-factor is the presentation of a pork-centric local breakfast classic. While the taste itself doesn’t fully validate the extreme internet hype, finding a clean comfortable place to have it was a mitigating factor.
Score: 6.5/10
