Kopi
I enjoyed the white coffee at Kedai Kopi Tok Tok Penang, but what caught my attention afterwards was the story behind the shop.
I found out that Tok Tok was opened by the proprietors of Goh Swee Kee Teochew Restaurant, just across the road. Goh Swee Kee has been serving old-school Teochew cooking along Jalan Sri Bahari for decades, while Tok Tok takes a much more casual kopitiam approach. The two businesses are just opposite one another, with Goh Swee Kee at No. 5 and Tok Tok at No. 8 Jalan Sri Bahari.
My visit this time just for a cup of white coffee.
It had enough body and coffee character to make it satisfying without needing to be excessively strong. That’s all I want from a kopitiam coffee: something easy to drink that makes you want to sit around for a little longer.
Kedai Kopi Tok Tok’s current menu actually gives quite a bit more reason to return. Beyond the usual kopi and toast, there are chicken rice, dry chicken noodles and its own Mee Tok Tok.
But on this visit, it was simply about a good cup of white coffee.
White Coffee – RM4.20
MVX Score: 7.8/10
M – Meal Value
White coffee starts from RM4.20 on the current menu, which remains very reasonable for a sit-down kopitiam in central George Town.
Score: 8.0/10
V – Venue
Tok Tok has a more contemporary air-conditioned kopitiam feel than the old-school Teochew restaurant across the road. It’s casual and suited to an easy breakfast or coffee stop.
Score: 7.5/10
X – X-Factor
The coffee was enjoyable and the environment was comfortable.
