Nasi Lemak, Pork-Free
If you find yourself in Kampung Baru, do your palate a favour and head straight to Nasi Lemak Wanjo. It is simple, and unforgettable. One bite of their superbly cooked rice will transport you back 20 years, as every grain was ideally cooked, and individually and independently santan-ed. It complements the accompanying dishes (‘lauk’ in the lingua franca) perfectly.
One of the highlights of Nasi Lemak Wanjo is their sambal sotong, a dish that is cooked to absolute perfection. The tender squid (sotong) has a light sambal sauce, not too oily, and has vegetables that haven’t been cooked to death and will leave you asking for more. Pair it with their fragrant rice and you have a match made in gastronomie heaven.
And let’s not forget about their mouth-watering ayam rendang, a dish that showcases the richness of Malay spices and tender chicken simmered to perfection. This was a proper piece of chicken too. Each bite a conconutty spicy burst of flavour.
Plus, the generous helping of ikan bilis adds a delightful crunch to complete your culinary experience at Nasi Lemak Wanjo.
I had it with the ice tea (teh ais) and it wasn’t overly sweet.
The environs were well managed, light and airy with very efficient service. The staff were impeccably presented, friendly and proactive.
Parking was easy and reasonably priced.
