Indian, Banana Leaf Rice, Pork-Free
Lately, I've been having frequent hankerings for spicy South Indian food for lunch at prices that won't put a crater in my wallet. I had heard lots of good things about the banana leaf rice at Restoran Chakra (Puchong Mess). It's a rather unique dining experience because the venue is actually a catering business.

The signboard for the ground level unit says Chakra Catering Services; you have to go up to the second floor to get to the dining area. Take off your shoes before you enter, the wait staff points you to available seats, and you sit at long tables next to the walls. Sitting side-by-side with fellow diners, I'm reminded of a mess hall or canteen so it's not a spot for lunch followed by a long chat.
The banana leaf rice set is served with either white rice or Indian rice. I opt for Indian rice for its higher fiber content and lower glycemic index. The weekday banana leaf set with vegetables, rasam and plain water goes for RM10 whereas the special Friday set with extra veg is RM12. Copious lashings of fish curry on top of dhal, to the point of drowning the rice, give me the right kind of spice kick.

As for protein, my choice of fried tenggiri fish (RM8 per piece) turns out to be a good one. The fish is fresh, the flesh is well-cooked, and there's enough spice and salt without going overboard. There's also a variety of chicken and mutton dishes if you're looking for more spicy options.
I think I've found my favorite banana leaf spot in Puchong. Just remember to get to Restoran Chakra (Puchong Mess) early because it can get crowded during the usual weekday lunch hour. Parking can also be difficult.
