Chai Kueh, Street Food, Vegetarian
Restoran Chua Siang Yean is a true hidden gem for chai kueh lovers. This unassuming restaurant that sells only chai kueh is located deep in a housing area and it would take an avid foodie to locate it. However, it is worth the long drive there because chai kueh of this quality is very difficult to find nowadays.
The friendly and affable sole proprietor, Ah Huat, is a Master chai kueh maker. He has been making this steamed vegetable dumplings for more than 35 years now. He makes 5 types of chai kueh every day; mangkuang (sengkuang), mangkuang, carrot and parsley, yam (keladi), pumpkin and chives (ku chai).
The main difference between the chai kueh here and those sold elsewhere is the amount of filling in them. Ah Huat's chai kueh are not flat but roundish and bulging with a generous amount of filling. Together with the finely chopped and homefried garlic that Ah Huat sprinkles on them, they are certainly very authentically tasty and satisfying chai kueh indeed.
All the 5 types of chai kueh are sold at only RM1.00 per piece, a very fair price indeed. Ah Huat caters for bulk orders too.
Editor's Note
Chai Kueh is a steamed vegetable dumpling with a chewy skin and crunchy vegetable filling.
