Simple Cafe Penang Lontong
Post by Chiefeater Peter Yeoh
Lontong is a breakfast item of Javanese origin which I missed from Singapore, as it's very hard to find anywhere in Malaysia north of Johore. It consisted of nasi himpit (compressed rice cakes), drenched in a rich, delicious Sayur Lodeh - a soupy turmeric-tinged, coconut milk-rich vegetable gravy.
Sayur Lodeh would consist of sayur buncis (green beans), bengkoang (jicama), wortel (carrot), kubis (cabbage), tahu (hard tofu), kembang tahu (dried tofu skin) and teller rebus (hard-boiled egg).
Simple Cafe Penang on the corner of Jalan Dato' Koyah and Clarke Street, is one of the very few places in Penang where one can find this rare delicacy. And it's a very good one, too - spicy-delicious.
