Lontong is a breakfast item of Javanese origin which I missed from Singapore, as it’s very hard to find anywhere in Malaysia north of Johore. It consisted of nasi himpit (compressed rice cakes), drenched in a rich, delicious Sayur Lodeh – a soupy turmeric-tinged, coconut milk-rich vegetable gravy.

Sayur Lodeh would consist of sayur buncis (green beans), bengkoang (jicama), wortel (carrot), kubis (cabbage), tahu (hard tofu), kembang tahu (dried tofu skin) and teller rebus (hard-boiled egg).
