Nasi Lemak, Street Food
I recently revisited Restoran Tan Yew Lai Nasi Lemak Corner, a local landmark that has been a staple in the Tan Yew Lai community for 27 years. The business has a rich history, evolving from a humble roadside stall to a food truck, and now operating out of its own rented shoplot.

I ordered the nasi lemak and mee hoon, which came to a total of RM15.50. The nasi lemak was paired with sambal petai, which provided a significant “burn” and featured a very strong petai flavor. While the taste was impressive, the portion of petai was a bit sparse with only five pieces included.

The mee hoon was a delight and I actually liked the mee hoon more that the Nasi Lemak. The flavour was good and the vermicelli texture was not brittle.

Nasi Lemak with Petai & Mee Hoon – RM15.50
Score: 7.17/10
M – Meal Value
The pricing remains accessible, especially considering the long history and reputation of the brand. At RM15.50 for a hearty portion that includes specialty items like sambal petai, it provides a satisfying meal that reflects its roadside heritage while transitioning to a shop setting.
Score: 7.5/10
V – Venue & Vibes
Now located in a proper shoplot on Jalan Taman Tan Yew Lai, the restaurant offers a more structured dining environment than its food truck days. It maintains a bustling, authentic local kopitiam atmosphere that is popular with both long-time residents and new visitors.
Score: 7.0/10
X – X-Factor
The x-factor for me was in the Mee Hoon.
Score: 7.0/10
