Asam Laksa, Street Food, Pork-Free
Tong Sun Kedai Kopi on Perak Road is where we can get Balik Pulau-taste asam laksa without having to drive to the southern end of Penang island. It is located in a kopitiam and operated by a cheerful and friendly proprietress, Ms Yen. She has been trading here for seven years now.

She learned and took over this small laksa business from her mother-in-law who had since retired. The latter used to sell asam laksa in Kuala Jalan Baru, a coastal village (kampong) in Balik Pulau. Hence, the name of her stall now is Kampong Laksa.

Personally, I would rate her laksa as among the ‘ho chiak’ (tasty) ones in Penang. The soup is sour and hot (pedas) enough and with just the right degree of sweetish after-taste. And it comes with generous amount of sizeable pieces of fish meat.

It costs RM5.00 for a standard serving and RM6.00 for a big one. The add-on fried spring roll (popiah) is RM1.20 each.

Open : 10.30 am – 6.30 pm
Closed : 1st and 15th day and the last day of the Chinese lunar months.
