Pork Noodles
Chiefeater William brought me to Wah Cheong Coffee Shop @ Section 17 PJ which is located very near to the Section 17 wet market. First reactions- the soup that came with the (square) pork balls or 3 kan cheong is the peppery kind (not the clear soup base). This was perfect for my tastebuds.
And a little context– I generally prefer the soupy pork noodles (e.g. Peter’s, Ooi Noodle House) over these pork ball noodles; the last memorable one being the Imbi shop from 30-40 years ago. I heard reviews that that one has declined over the years. Which leads me to this very fine example of pork ball noodles in Wah Cheong coffeeshop.
Straight 7.5/10 out of the gate!
I prefer to have the dry version of this dish, and it must be rat tail noodles. The Chinese sausage is usually too sweet (for me) to have on its own, but with this peppery, savoury taste notes – perfectly balanced.
The soup is overtly peppery, which I like. Others might prefer the lighter base, clear soup.
Chiefeater William also spied the pork noodles (yes, two pork specialists under the same roof!).
The pork noodles is the ‘main’ tenant of Wah Cheong, with purported waits of up to an hour per bowl to arrive. Today we tried our luck, and it was, well, 55 mins.
