Japanese, Yakitori, Non-Halal
Yakitori Syokudo Yae first opened its doors in Jaya One but they have now ventured into Puchong in October 2022. Puchong is one of the main food havens in the Klang Valley, so it’s no wonder they made their way here. While there are a lot of food options in Puchong, good Yakitori options were few and far between.
Syokudo or Shokudo means a dining room in Japanese. Traditionally dining rooms did not exist but came about through the assimilation of western culture into Japanese society. Over the years, Syokudo has come to mean a small casual dining spot that serves inexpensive dishes. They are usually independently operated.
Yakitori Syokudo Yae may call itself a Syokudo but it really falls closer to being an Izakaya. An Izakaya is a casual drinking establishment that serves varieties of small dishes. One of those small dishes would almost always be a yakitori, complemented with a steady supply of Kirin or Sapporo beers.
Anyway, enough about these distinctions. I am just glad for another option for yakitori in Puchong.
We ordered Tori Nankotsu Karaage or Fried Chicken Soft Bone (RM12.90++), a mixed Yakitori set (RM33++), Buta Yaki Don Set (RM17.90++), Pork Tongue Set (RM6.00++), Shiro Mauro or White Tuna (RM8.00++) and some Eringgi Mushrooms (RM4.00++).
The skewers are skewered on demand. They are then grilled over a charcoal grill giving it a smokey flavour. Interestingly, the outlet doesn't reek of smoke. They have done an excellent job with the ventilation.
I enjoyed the skewers. The item that I enjoyed most was the fried chicken soft bone, which wasn't even a skewer. The skewers were all well seasoned though the quality of some of meats was a bit mushy. Looking at the prices, you can't expect the meat to be premium.
I also ordered a Kirin Yuki Beer, a snow beer (RM20++) to see how that went with the skewers. I think I will try the Guinness Yuki next time.
All in our bill for 3 pax came up to RM118.60, which would put it into the affordable range for many Puchongites. Decent food, decent prices and very good front of the house service. I will return.
