Fried Rice, Non-Halal
do you know the famous hailam char, Jim's Hailam Char, formerly at yik kheng kee coffee shop at kimberly st had moved since last year? there is still a stall there but not manned by the original owner.
the son of the original owner, michael ong, now manned the eatery with his wife, angie. first they moved to macallum st, then just recently they were at madras lane, opened 10 days ago. i went for dinner yesterday.
was there early at about 6.00pm so no customer yet. good… i like it this way so that i can take photos with ease. i order the signature fried rice. the fried rice had tiny pcs of char siew (bbq pork) and long beans in it beside the usual egg and prawns… oh lots of spring onion too. can see lot of wok hei in the fried rice when i notice all the rice grains were separate out. can see grain by grain. tasted good overall and it was a big serving too.
i also order ‘bak khean’ (don’t know what it is called in english). actually wanted to order lor bak (chinese 5 spices meat roll) but it was not available and angie asked me to take the ‘bak khean’ instead. the ‘bak khean’ was very crispy on the outside. taste wise quite okay.
for drink i order the ‘932’ drink which i never heard of the name but was surprised when it was bought to me, it is none other that what i always call “keat la sui pui” – yes with calamansi and sour plum. hmm… now only i know it is called 932 too.
note: i am showing the picture of the hailam char i order last year too… well since here is famous for hailam char.
friendly husband and wife, angie and michael, the owners. michael does all the cooking. chatted to angie a lot before my food arrived and after food, chatted to both of them. they happily obliged when i request for a photo of them.
oh michael recommend strongly their chicken chop, saying it is very special. hmm... maybe one day i should go and try then.
