On a recent trip back to my hometown in Taiping, had dinner at our usual favourite restaurant situated in a new village - Restoran 83 Pokok Assam. We had the kailan with canned braised pork, fish maw with crab meat stew, clay pot braised pork knuckle with peanut, soya sauce prawns and a steamed slice grouper fish.
The kailan with canned braised pork was flavourful with a nice aromatic sauce. Not many restaurants have this dish in their menu.
The pale looking soupy and slightly starchy fish maw with crab meat was quite bland, but the addition of sweet black vinegar fully enhanced the flavour, akin to have shark fin soup, which I usually try to avoid.
Clay pot braised pork knuckle with peanut was heavy in flavour, the pork knuckle and peanut was soft and tender.
Soya sauce prawns was slightly sweet and appetizing, the prawns was fresh and bouncy.
Steamed grouper fish slice was dosed with a slightly sweetish light soya sauce, topped with a generous amount of crispy fried preserved radish and garlic. Fish was fresh and firm.
Situated in a corner lot village house converted into a restaurant, the restaurant is clean and tidy, with an open air and air cond section. Parking was a breeze, service was prompt and price was very very reasonable.
