Nyonya, Non-Halal
Kampung Dining in PJ’s Section 17 was a place some of friends had raved about, and I finally made it there to sample their non-halal Nyonya cuisine. Knowing they specialize in pork dishes, I went straight for the highlights – and wasn’t disappointed.
The braised pork pongteh (RM32) was tender, falling apart at the touch of a fork, and the sauce had a wonderfully complex flavour profile – savoury, slightly sweet, and deeply umami from the fermented beans. It was served with a generous scattering of spring onions which added a welcome freshness to cut through the richness.

Next up was the Chicken Rendang (RM29). The chicken were cooked to perfection and coated in a vibrant, fragrant dry curry that had just the right amount of heat.

The Charred Cauliflower with pomegranates (RM19) was a surprising flavour. The charred smokiness blending and the sweetness of the pomegranates blending in an interesting way on the tongue.

The Pork Satay (RM24) offered a more familiar flavour, but was executed well; the pork was nicely charred and the peanut sauce had a good balance of sweetness and saltiness.

The pork lard (RM2) and rice were just us being decadent.
We wrapped up with a mini bowl of Cendol (RM5.50) each

While Kampung Dining isn’t exactly budget-friendly, the quality of ingredients and skillful preparation make it worthwhile for those seeking a contemporary Nyonya pork experience.
