Tucked just up the road from the more popular Ahwa Hokkien Mee, Peng Yuan Hokkien Mee may often be overshadowed, but it holds its ground confidently with its own signature take on this beloved KL classic.

Each plate is carefully fried over a hot stove.

Their Hokkien Mee leans towards a drier style, less wet than what many are used to — but that just means the wok hei comes through more intensely. Each strand of noodle was coated in a rich, savoury, slightly caramelised dark soy glaze, with crispy pork lard bits fried into the noodles. It’s bold, full-bodied, and delicious in a way that doesn’t rely on moisture for satisfaction. However, it does take a while for them to fulfill your order as it's one guy frying it over a wok.

We also had the Wat Tan Hor, which was a disappointment compared to the Hokkien Mee. When it arrived, the noodles weren't even hot.

Both dishes were ordered in portions for three people each, and the total came up to RM70, which felt fair given the quality and portion size. Peng Yuan Hokkien Mee for me is an underrated version that deserves more attention.
