Kai See Hor Fun
This bowl of kai see hor fun from Bamboo Kopi stood out the moment it landed on the table not because of its size or garnishes, but because of the unmistakable prawn aroma wafting from the broth. The soup shimmered, thick and slightly opaque, with a silky mouthfeel that was almost bisque-like, hinting at a painstakingly extracted crustacean stock.
The hor fun was delicate and silky smooth, sliding easily between spoon and chopsticks. Topped with poached chicken, prawns, a few slivers of chives, and crispy shallots, it ticked the visual boxes. But unlike the sweet, clear broths of the many Ipoh-style kai see hor fun, this one leaned savoury and robust, with a more umami-forward profile and little sweetness.
What may polarise diners, though, is the portion of soup—this stall keeps it on the parsimonious side. When asked why it was so, Lee the proprietor said that he did not want the broth to drown the shredded chicken and prawns in the dish. If you’re the type who enjoys generous ladles of broth, this might leave you wanting more. But what is served is thoughtfully concentrated, almost like the reduced essence of prawn noodles.
At RM10 for a small bowl, it is a fair price to pay for depth of flavour rather than volume. It’s a different interpretation of a familiar dish, and for fans of deeply prawn-flavoured broths, it might just be worth the visit.
The service level is fantastic. On seeing that I was carrying a laptop bag, the waiter moved the chair next to me so that I could have my bag next to me instead of across me. That's a better level of service than some fancy cafes I have been to.
