I had heard from colleagues about a place with the intriguing name of Dyslexia Cafe in Bandar Baru Bangi. What's in a name? It turns out most of the workers are dyslexic, but that doesn't stop them from cooking up some excellent Malay food and good cakes too.

The Langkawi laksa is an interesting version of the local noodle dish. The slightly sour and very spicy broth, redolent with spices like tamarind and torch ginger flower, is thick with big chunks of fish meat. No curry paste or coconut milk in this version.

Here's a creative mix of traditional Malay and typical cafe fare: a pengat pisang cheesecake. Pengat pisang is a dessert made of bananas and sago pearls cooked slowly in coconut milk. This cheesecake concoction mixes the creaminess of bananas and coconut milk with the sharp, sourish tang of cream cheese, with a hint of pandan on top.

The scones are also light and fluffy, not like the dense pucks of flour and butter found in some other places. Good for tea.

I went to Dyslexia Cafe for a late lunch on a weekend and it was easy to get a table. It's usually busy during lunch and dinner services. The cafe also handles events and there's an additional dining area on the upper floor.

Dyslexia is a common learning difficulty that mainly causes problems with reading, writing and spelling. Unlike a learning disability, intelligence isn’t affected.
