Tai Loke Mee, Street Food, Non-Halal
Some things of a rarity in Penang, is a dish call “Tai Loke Mee”. Thankfully it can be found at Guan Seng Restaurant.
Tai Loke Mee is the Penang Version of what those in KL call Hokkien Mee. The name basically describes the size of the noodles (Big Round) that is used in this dish. How close is this to the KL version? My opinion is that it’s pretty close. The Penang sellers version usually has more gravy and is served with sambal belacan.
Where to find this, if you really want to eat this in Penang, you have to try your luck with those stalls that sells Sar Hor Fun, out of 10, may be one of them will have it.
Guan Seng Restaurant is just a few shoplots away from Econsave Raja Uda.
Tai Loke Mee is actually a variant of KL Hokkien Mee and is commonly found in Penang. The dish is prepared similarly to KL Hokkien Mee, but with a lighter gravy or broth. The noodles are stir-fried with ingredients such as pork, prawns, squid, and vegetables, and then served in a clear broth made with pork bones or chicken. The dish is often topped with sliced meat, vegetables, and chili paste. While Tai Loke Mee is lighter in flavor compared to KL Hokkien Mee, it still shares similarities in terms of the ingredients and preparation method.
