Kim’s Bagels Ondeh Ondeh Cake

Cake

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

There are cakes that look spectacular but taste ordinary. Then there are cakes like this one from Kim’s Bagels, which is a place that I go for bagels. I only knew how good their Ondeh Ondeh cake was from a neighbour, Chiefeater Cynthia Lim.

Take note, you need to place an order a whole cake 4 days ahead.

To be honest, the photos don’t do the Ondeh Ondeh Cake (RM188 for an 8 inch cake) any justice at all as I took the it only after I had sliced it. The moment I had my first bite, I immediately understood why so many people recommend it.

The spongy texture of the cake was beautifully light and fluffy without being dry. Every slice had just enough moisture to keep it soft while allowing the flavours to come through cleanly.

What really stood out was the Gula Melaka. Rich, fragrant and wonderfully aromatic, it complemented the pandan sponge perfectly without making the cake overly sweet. The grated coconut added another layer of texture and completed the familiar flavours of the traditional Malaysian kuih that inspired it.

The balance was what impressed me most. Rather than overwhelming the palate with sweetness, every component worked together harmoniously, making the cake surprisingly easy to keep eating.

It was one of those desserts where you tell yourself you’ll have one slice, only to realise you’ve quietly gone back for another.

If you’re looking for something different from the usual chocolate or cheesecake for your next celebration, this is a cake that’s well worth considering.
