Cakes
There’s always room for one last dessert before leaving Penang. That final stop was Moonshine Cakes & Coffee, where I ordered their Classic Tiramisu. It turned out to be a fitting way to wrap up the trip.

The first thing I noticed was the texture. The sponge was wonderfully bouncy and remained moist throughout, allowing the mascarpone cream to stay light without becoming overly rich. Every bite was soft and airy, making it very easy to finish.

Flavour-wise, the coffee came through nicely and the balance between the cream and sponge was well judged. Personally, I would have preferred a little more rum to give it a stronger alcoholic kick, but even without it, this was still an enjoyable tiramisu.

The café itself occupies a charming heritage shophouse along Jalan Sri Bahari. Its relaxed atmosphere, high ceilings and cosy seating make it an inviting place to slow down over coffee and cake.

I didn’t need an elaborate dessert. A well-executed classic was more than enough, and Moonshine Cakes delivered one that’s worth stopping by for if you’re exploring George Town.

Classic Tiramisu — RM22.90
MVX Score: 8.6/10
M – Meal Value
RM22.90 isn’t inexpensive for a slice of cake, but the generous portion, quality ingredients and excellent texture make it worthwhile.
Score: 8.5/10
V – Venue
A cosy heritage café with a relaxed ambience that’s ideal for coffee, desserts or a quiet afternoon break.
Score: 8.8/10
X – X-Factor
The beautifully moist, bouncy sponge sets this tiramisu apart. I would have welcomed a touch more rum, but it’s still one of the better versions I’ve had recently.
