MJ SS3 Kopitiam Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun

Chee Cheong Fun, Street Food

Description

Post by Chiefeater VK

MJ SS3 Kopitiam is known for its Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun, and there is actually some history behind that claim. The Chee Cheong Fun is brought in from Ipoh rather than made locally, something that has been reported about the stall for several years.

I tried two versions this time.

The Curry CCF (RM10.50) came with pork skin, giving me the familiar combination of slippery rice noodles with a rich curry sauce.

But it was the Turnip Roll CCF (RM7) that I particularly liked.

The proprietor then suggested something I wouldn’t have thought of myself: take the Turnip Roll and mix it with some of the curry sauce from the Curry CCF I had eaten earlier.

Good suggestion.

The Turnip Roll already had plenty going on with the turnip filling against the soft Chee Cheong Fun. Adding some curry brought another layer of richness and spice to it without having to order it as a completely different dish.

I finished with the White Coffee (RM3).

My first impression wasn’t quite as positive — until I realised I hadn’t properly stirred it. 😅

After a good stir, it was decent.

There’s clearly more for me to explore at MJ SS3, but if you’re coming specifically for the Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun, I’d include the Turnip Roll and take the proprietor’s advice: add some curry sauce and try the two together.

Pricing

Curry CCF – RM10.50
Turnip Roll CCF – RM7.00
White Coffee – RM3.00
Teh O Ais – RM3.10

Total: RM23.60

MVX Summary

MVX Score: 7.8/10

M – Meal Value
RM7 for the Turnip Roll CCF and RM10.50 for the Curry CCF with pork skin keep this firmly within neighbourhood kopitiam pricing. The RM3 White Coffee was decent once properly stirred.
Score: 8.0/10

V – Venue
MJ SS3 is a straightforward neighbourhood kopitiam in Taman Universiti. It’s functional rather than somewhere you come for the surroundings, although the range of stalls gives you plenty to explore.
Score: 6.5/10

X – X-Factor
Having Chee Cheong Fun brought in from Ipoh gives the stall its point of difference, but the Turnip Roll was what stood out for me. Dipping it into the curry sauce at the proprietor’s suggestion made it even better.
Score: 8.5/10
