Breakfast at Kheng Pin Cafe Penang was a mixed affair.

We had Loh Mee and Hokkien Mee for RM13. They were alright. Nothing wrong with them, but neither was the thing I found myself thinking about afterwards.

That honour went to the lor bak. We ordered five pieces of fried items for RM9.30, and the best bite among them was the tofu.

That tofu had a really good combination of taste and bite. The exterior had been fried enough to give it texture, while the inside still retained that softer tofu character.

It was simple, but very satisfying.

The rest of the platter had the familiar mix of fried items you expect from a Penang lor bak stall, but the tofu was the piece I would happily order again.

Our drinks came to RM4.30, bringing breakfast to RM26.60 in total.

Kheng Pin itself is the sort of old-school Penang kopitiam that still feels like a proper hawker breakfast stop. The setting is basic, the food comes from different stalls and the turnover is brisk.

RM26.60 for two noodle dishes, five pieces of loh bak and drinks is still very reasonable. The noodles were only alright, but the loh bak — especially the tofu — gave the meal a lift.

This is classic old-school Penang kopitiam territory: functional, busy and built around multiple hawker stalls rather than comfort or ambience.

X – X-Factor
The lor bak stall is the reason I would remember this breakfast. That fried tofu had the best combination of flavour and texture of anything we ate.
