Pie
Jen discovered that The Mosaic Cafe at Hyatt Regency Kota Kinabalu sells an Oxtail Assam Pedas Pie which is based on the hotel’s famous Oxtail Assam Pedas. At RM25, she decided to buy two and take it back to the hotel room.
The pie had a nicely browned crust with flaky, buttery pastry. Cutting into it revealed substantial pieces of oxtail in an assam pedas filling.
What impressed me most, however, was the balance of flavours.
I had enjoyed the original Oxtail Assam Pedas at Tanjung Ria Kitchen, although I found the gravy more spicy than sour. In the pie, the flavours came together better for me.
The pastry was good, but it was really the filling that made the difference.
For anyone who enjoys savoury pies and wants to try a different take on assam pedas, this is one I’d happily choose again.

At RM25, the pie offered flaky, buttery pastry and a substantial oxtail filling with a better balance of flavours than the restaurant version.

Doens’t apply since I took it back to the room.

X – X-Factor
Turning Hyatt’s signature Oxtail Assam Pedas into a savoury pie was an interesting idea, and the execution worked particularly well. The balance of the filling made this more enjoyable than the original dish for me.
