Dongmyeong Port is not a tourist trap. It is a working fishing harbour, with Sokcho Lighthouse (속초등대) on the hill and Yeonggeumjeong pavilion (영금정) perched on the rocks across the water. You pick your fish live at Dongmyeong Seafood Center from the tanks downstairs, they slice it on the spot, and you carry it up to the 2nd floor (2층) to eat. No menus to speak of, just pink plastic baskets lined with paper towels.

The hoe (회) was thin-sliced white fish, firm and clean, with a side of raw sea snail (소라) that was chewy and briny. Dip it in chogochujang (초고추장) and wrap it in lettuce (상추), as the locals do.

The star was a bogeo (복어), a puffer fish, so fresh its head was still twitching as it went into the pot. Nothing is wasted: the head and bones go into bok-maeuntang (복매운탕), a spicy puffer fish stew piled high with crown daisy (쑥갓). After a long hike, it is exactly what the body asks for. Puffer fish must be prepared by licensed cooks in Korea, so you are in safe hands here.

A little rough around the edges, and prices vary with the catch, so agree the price before they cut. But for freshness, it does not get better than this.
